Start with your use case and environment

First, note where the cable or cord will work. Indoor use is different from shop floors, kitchens, and outdoor setups. Write down voltage, current load, temperature exposure, and how often the cord will bend. If it sits behind a moving machine or in a tight routing path, bending and abrasion become important. If it runs near heat, insulation grade becomes critical.
